5 Myths about Search Engine Optimisation you MUST not believe

Search Engine Optimisation or commonly referred to as (SEO) is the technique of improving a websites position on Google in order to drive more traffic through to that website. Essentially, the higher you are on Google the more clicks you are going to get on your website and this in turn will lead to more sales or inquiries. It is that simple; improve ones organic position on Google through ‘white hat’ SEO practices and you will profit. It’s clear cut.

seomythsBut getting to this first page is not an easy process. Most business owners have some idea about SEO, cause it’s been around for a few years now, but the majority are still unclear about what it takes to rank a website ethically and organically. They may have read some articles somewhere online or spoken to a few people about SEO or even worse be stuck in a contract with an SEO agency that still uses techniques that are outdated. In nay case I thought I would list a few SEO myths that need to be highlighted here that are completely and utterly outdated and need to be stopped. If you still are under the impression that these practices are OK, then you better understand quickly that they are not. In fact, if you or your SEO providor are still using these, then they could be damaging your brand online and potential Google rankings. So read on, enjoy and be prepared to caste aside those SEO untruths.

Untruth #1 Adwords or (PPC) will help improve your organic, natural ranking

If only this were true, then everyone would be scrambling to pay more for their Adwords. I still can’t believe how many people still believe this insane myth. Adwords or PPC is totally different from SEO. Adwords as we all know are the paid ads on the right hand side of the Google page as well as the top 3 ads – everything else is SEO related and this is where you want you website to be located. The huge difference between PPC and SEO is that you have to pay for PPC and SEO is free.

If spending more money on Adwords would help your SEO then the whole fabric of Google would break down. Why? Cause anyone can pay to be up on page 1 through an Adwords campaign BUT only 10 websites can be on page 1 at any point in time. This myth is perpetuated by Adword companies that try to fool you into believing that the more you spend with them on a PPC campaign, the more your website will get clicked on and the more popular your site will become. The crux of the myth is that popular sites that are clicked on via adwords will improve rankings cause Google MUST love popular site – what a load of rubbish and what a bunch of baloney – Get this idea out of your mind, cause the only way a website will rank in the search results is through SEO. Simple as that – so lets kill off this untruth.

Untruth #2 The larger the website, with more pages, the better.

You might think that the more pages you have on your website the better it will do when it comes to rankings. Overall, this is not a bad strategy but you have to ask yourself what type of content am I publishing on my website. Is it dribble or is it worth reading then sharing online with other people who may also like what you have to say.

It’s all about content marketing and Google will reward your website if you are blogging and publishing pages that are deemed to be useful and worthwhile. Putting pages live just for the sake of it and beefing your site up to try and manipulate SEO is a myth and one that needs to besorted out ASAP. Google has released algorithms that can detect poorly worded content and this is going to hamper any chance you may have of ranking. Not only does it annoy your reader but it will kill your SEO – golden rule is to publish content that you are proud of. Anything else simply delete.

Untruth #3 Let’s get as many links as we can

This is with out doubt the worst myth and the most common one. People are still under the impression that the more in bound links you have the better off you will be. Perhaps 5 years ago this was the case, but just try to get away with it now and see what happens – a MASSIVE Google penalty. That’s all you will get. Links are now considered voodoo unless they are from credible worthwhile sources that are actually relevant to your website.

So many and I mean there are hundreds of really bad SEO agencies throughout Australia that still practice this type of SEO and I really feel sorry for those people that believe the lies they are spun, just to get your business. It’s a scam and a fraud and if you are a believer of link building schemes then you better stop it right there.

In some cases, when SEO is handled by a proper SEO agency like us here at SEO SYDNEY EXPERTS, link building is OK – all that needs to happen is that it is implemented in a controlled and strategic manner. This is the cornerstone and foundation of proper SEO and is what we live by.

There are so many types of link building styles that this MUST be managed in a controlled manner- ideally you need high quality links – this is an extremely important myth so if you are still unclear about this I really recommend that you give me a call on 02 9360 8514.

Untruth #4 Keyword stuffing will work

The theory here kind of makes sense. It goes something like this. If I use the same keyword for my business in the page title and throughout the content of the page then in theory it should rank better than the next person. Well, WRONG! I see sites that have tried this and the only outcome is that it looks absolutely abysmal.

Known as keyword spamming, this was once a favourite of many people who thought they could push their page up the rankings by writing really bad copy and repeat the process. Again, like monotonous web content this is just as ridiculous and Google has simply put an end to this. If your website sounds even remotely spammy its just not going to rank.

Because Google wants to display search results to the users that are credible. Google would loose customers and online users if it ranked sub standard websites. Hence if you want to rise above the masses and have a website that sits right up there on page 1 of Google make sure you spend the appropriate amount of time, energy and brain energy that makes compelling reading. Anything other than the best will not survive Google’s stringent algorithmic filters.

Untruth #5 Any old SEO company will do

Wow, if only this were the case. Most people have been through their second or even third SEO agency and they still can’t get it right. Why? Cause they tend to choose the company that is going to give them the best price and offer ridiculous ranking guarantees. In short any SEO SIMPLY WILL NOT do. Making poor choices based on uneducated decisions is the road to online failure and this road is absolutely jammed clogged with the tortured remains of businesses that refused to listen.

I don’t want to harp on this subject too much as I could spend days lecturing you about the pitfalls of using a dodgy SEO company. Suffice to say, go with a company that can actually rank their own website on Google and go with a SEO supplier that’s not trying to ram a 12 month contract down your throat. Don’t believe all the crap they spin you over the phone – go in and actually sit down with them and see if they are all they are cracked up to be.

So there you have it. 5 myths and untruths regarding SEO that should help you on the path of discovering the real realities of SEO – again in you still need a helping hand why not drop me a line.

Why You’re Websites Not # 1 on Google.

Being # 1 on Google is what it’s all about. If your business relies on SEO and being really high on Google, then knowing why you are not #1 is a first step in rectifying any issues you may have. Knowing why you just can’t seem to crack position number 1 is invaluable if you are ever going to achieve this high status. Believe me when I tell you this, being on page 1 is no just not good enough, you really need to be in the top 3 positions and this is the real reality of Google.

Most companies I know are content to site on page 1 or even 2 of Google. I for one, do not accept this and feel that you are either in the top 3 positions or you are no where. This is the way we operate at SEO Sydney Experts. If you are not right up there, then we are not happy. So why is it that your website seems to never be able to get to that coveted # 1 position?

The biggest reason that I know of is that you have decided to use a SEO company that doesn’t know what they are doing. Whilst this may be a bitter pill to swallow, because you were probably told in the initial discussions or meetings with them that they could perform miracles and they probably showed you other sites that they got to page 1 etc etc.

It’s a real let down to be told that your SEO, that you have trusted for months or even years has dropped the ball and does not know what works and what doesn’t work with Google. After all you have been paying them a respectable fee each month and you expect results.

The real reality is that many SEO companies are just sales fronts for collecting your money and all your work is outsourced overseas. This is a real worry and the main reason, why your rankings have not progressed up the queue. Shoddy, shonky, sloppy SEO work is the catalyst for poor rankings and in some severe cases a manual action or site penalty.

I strongly suggest that if you have given your current SEO company enough time to work on your campaign and they just can’t quite seem to get you the results you were looking for, then it’s time to make a switch. There is absolutely no point in hanging around with these guys in the hope that some miracle will happen and your rankings will turn around. If they can’t get you to # 1 or very close by now, the chances are they never will.

If you are in a contract with them and you want to leave then all I can suggest is that you pay out the contract in full, learn from your mistake and move on to bigger and better things. Yes, you will take a loss, but its much better to start resuscitating those ranking slumps now, than waiting another 6 months or even a year. Think of all that lost business and the opportunity cost of not making the decision to move on.

Far too many businesses who search for SEO companies on Google come across unfortunately SEO agencies that offer PAGE 1 GUARANTEES. This is another very real reason why your website is not # 1 on Google. The answer for this is so simple that I cannot believe that people still fall for this scam.

So how does it work? These shonksters will offer you a page 1 guarantee for your keywords and once they are ranking they get you to sign up with them. Well, they may rank some keywords BUT which ones are they and are these the ones ou want to rank. I can bet anything that these are the easiest ones to rank and in many cases they probably already are (without you knowing it). Once ranking, you get the phone call and BOOM, you are in a contract. From this point onwards they have you and boy oh boy are you stuffed. These tossers will not do anything with your SEO and if you try to wriggle out of the contract you are going to get a letter from their legal team. This is the way it works with a huge number of SEO companies around Australia and it leaves people very distrustful of the few good guys who operate ethically.

Google comes out with some really big algorithmic updates and one of the latest was designed to look at sites that were thin on content. These sites will not rank as high as they could because of the lack of good, quality content. Getting by with a few paragraphs and thinking you will hit # 1 is not an option any more.

A real life example happened just this morning, when a landscape designer in Sydney phoned me up and was concerned that he was always sitting at the bottom of page 1 and could never get into the top 3. A quick look at his website diagnosed 1 of the issues and that was his lack of content. His main service offering page, ‘ landscape architects Sydney’ had only 2 or 3 paragraphs. His current SEO team should have picked this up and this should have been addressed months ago. If he decides to use us, this will be the first thing that I take a look at. Saying this, our strategy is much more involved than a quick content fix. This again, is only 1 of the problems that we would mitigate early on in his campaign to ensure better page 1 rankings.

Page title descriptions are the first thing that needs to be looked at with all websites. Incorrect titles are a contributing factor for poor SEO results. Titles may seem like a quick fix but there is an art to these so it’s best to leave it to people that have experience in this field. Doing it yourself and thinking you’ve got it right, is a common mistake. Leaving just 1 word out or having them in the wrong order could hinder rankings.

The last reason why your not # 1 on Google is your actual website. If it hasn’t been looked at in years or it has been poorly designed with little or no SEO in mind, then you are going to have some serious ‘on page’ issues. I have seen websites that are just so bad that even a page 10 ranking is out of the question.

There are so many ‘on page’ web components that need to tick boxes that again, like everything to do with SEO, its better to leave it to a team of experts like us here at SEO SYDNEY EXPERTS.

If you find that you are struggling to see an upward momentum in your rankings, why not contact us here on 02 9360 8514– I can take a quick look over the phone and probably tell you what the ranking issues are and ways to go about fixing them.
